Dr. Pontell and his wife, Ellyn, live in Northern Virginia, are the proud parents of two adult sons and enjoy active, outdoor activities including road cycling and skiing.
Dr. Pontell is the founding partner of Dominion Foot and Ankle Consultants in Fairfax, Virginia, whose mission is to provide outstanding, personalized foot and ankle care to every individual it serves. His practice interests include reconstruction of complex foot and ankle deformities including revision surgery, repair of foot and ankle trauma, and adolescent and adult sports medicine. He has extensive experience treating youth athletes who compete in soccer, track and field, ice hockey, and dance.
Dr. Pontell received his Bachelor of Arts in Physical Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania and obtained his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine from the Pennsylvania College of Podiatric Medicine (Temple University). He then completed a 3-year residency in Foot and Ankle Surgery in the Department of Surgery (Section Orthopedics) at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics, which included extensive training in Orthopedic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Endocrinology, and Rheumatology.
He is a fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and is board certified in Foot and Ankle Surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. He was one of the first Podiatric Surgeons in Northern Virginia to be credentialed and privileged to perform hospital-based rearfoot and ankle surgery.
Dr. Pontell served as Chief of the Podiatric Surgery Section in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Inova Fairfax Hospital from 2000 to 2004 and has served on the Orthopedic Education and Infections Committees of Inova Fairfax Hospital. He is Chairman of the Residency Training Committee for the Podiatric Surgery Residency Program at Inova Fairfax Hospital Medical Center and serves as the Secretary of the Virginia Podiatric Medical Association.
Due to his outstanding patient care and clinical expertise, Dr. Pontell was named on multiple years to the Top Doctors list in Washingtonian Magazine as well Northern Virginia Magazine and has received an Inova Fairfax Hospital Podiatric Residency Program Professionalism Award.
